Producers Access Latest Knowledge Base in Improving Reproductive Efficiency
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (Jan. 29, 2010) — Cattle producers attending the 2010 Cattle Industry Annual Convention and NCBA Trade Show in San Antonio had opportunity to listen to the latest in improving reproductive efficiency in beef cattle. The Beef Reproduction Task Force and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association teamed up to offer an Applied Reproductive Strategies in Beef Cattle (ARSBC) workshop Jan. 28-29 as part of the convention.
Attendees were treated to presentations offering practical ways to improve reproductive efficiency through improved bull fertility, improved estrus synchronization and artificial insemination (AI) strategies, developing breeding goals and managing the herd. Producers shared their experiences with synchronization and AI.
“The meeting is for producers, veterinarians and AI technicians, as well as anyone interested in beef cattle reproduction,” says Sandy Johnson, northwest area livestock specialist for Kansas State University. VISIT 2010 NEWSROOM “The workshop is designed to improve understanding and management of the beef cow estrous cycle, recommended estrus synchronization protocols, and other approaches to improving the efficiency of reproduction.”
The Beef Reproduction Task Force is a multistate Extension group made up of specialists from Kansas State University, University of Missouri, Iowa State University, University of Nebraska, South Dakota State University, University of Florida, University of Illinois and University of Idaho.

The ARSBC program …
The pattern for the Applied Reproductive Strategies in Beef Cattle program was developed under the direction of the Beef Cattle Reproduction Task Force. The first workshop was conducted in Manhattan, Kan., in 2002. Nine workshops have been hosted at locations across the country.
The purpose of the program is twofold — (1) to improve the understanding of the physiological processes of the estrous cycle, the procedures available to synchronize estrus and ovulation, and the proper application of these systems and (2) to improve the understanding of methods to assess male fertility and how it affects the success of artificial insemination programs.
